This weekend, Parker (little HP) and I flew back to Texas. The school, where my Dad (big HP) served as Superintendent, honored his service and life by dedicating a bench at the football stadium where he loved to cheer on the Cisco Loboes.
The bench is inscribed and says:
In Memory and Honoring Hal Porter
Meritorious Service - Cisco ISD Superintendent 2000 - 2011
Hal Porter with his wife, Margaret, worked tirelessly to obtain exemplary outcomes for all CISD students. Cisco ISD flourished because of Mr. Porter’s ability to recognize and develop potential in every student, faculty member, staff member and administrator. Cisco ISD became recognized across the state as one of the top 3A schools in academics and in extra—curricular activities. During his tenure, CISD constructed and Elementary Library, a Technology Building, a Band Hall and an Ag Building. Chelsea Field was remodeled including the addition of this Memorials Honors Park area. His “LOBO Pride” was obvious and never wavering.
As I walked back to that football field where my dad loved to spend his Friday nights, I thought. "I miss ya Hal Porter. I wish I could hug ya one more time. I’m inordinately proud that I’m your son, and I love that Parker shares a name with you. This weekend (and every day), I wish you could’ve spent some time together. You would’ve hit it off. I have no doubts he would be enamored by you (and you him)."
So, instead of a long post this weekend, I thought I would share the three songs that are playing on repeat in my head. I hope you like them. I realize they might not be as good as the new Adele single. What could be? But, they remind me of my dad, the guy I try to emulate as a father.
Go out and give someone you love an extra hug this weekend.
Parker listens to this song at night when he is getting ready for bed.
My dad used to sing this to us as kids. Now, I TRY to sing it to Parker.
I love driving my dad's F150. Every time we walk by the big Texas edition, dual cab truck, Parker says, "Papa." My heart just smiles.
